What was biting
Striped marlin
The striped marlin bite stayed strong around the Golden Gate Bank and the 95 Spot, with tailing and feeding fish giving anglers plenty of shots. We encourage releasing billfish and follow the local rule of one per boat per day.
Blue marlin
Not many blue marlin, but good ones: several boats hooked fish in the 200–350 lb class, with some long fights.
Yellowfin tuna
Tuna fishing out of San José del Cabo was fast and fun around Iman and San Luis. Small baits and jigs worked best.
Wahoo
Fast lures along the edges of the banks produced several good wahoo.
Dorado (mahi-mahi)
Dorado were steady all month, colorful and great eating, and a favorite for families.
Pacific sailfish
A few sailfish showed up and put on great jumping shows.
Stories from the month
Blake and Stan. Blake and his stepfather Stan come back to fish with us every year. Last year Blake fought a big blue marlin; this year he wanted tuna, with Stan and Max along. They went out from Marina Puerto Los Cabos with Captain Gonzalo Castillo, just back from representing Mexico at the Big Game World Championship in France, and he put them on the tuna right away.
Mario Bibo. Two years ago Mario had never fished. This month he added a big Pacific sailfish to his list, with long runs, wild jumps and a clean release.
Fathers and their kids. A group of fathers brought their children out to teach them patience, teamwork and respect for the ocean. When a big marlin showed up, the kids watched their dads work the fish, and by the end of the day they were young anglers themselves.
